Tyler, visiting from Chicago, caught this beautiful pompano while fishing the middle grounds with me this past week. It’s a great week for fishing Sarasota Bay, and pompano fishing here on the Gulf Coast is a premier winter/spring activity, with the fish migrating south to the region from November through April, peaking from late February to April.
They are highly targeted on inner coastal grass flats for their fighting ability and excellent taste. Look for water temperatures in the low 60s to mid-70s, generally appearing after cold fronts.
I've been a fishing guide the Sarasota , Boca Grande area for over 25 years. My Sarasota trips are mostly family oriented 1/2 day fishing trips involving kids who love to catch all the family fun fish. My Boca Grande trips are for the more experienced spin or fly fishing angler.
