Cool water temperatures have been keeping recent catches somewhat reduced. That being said the trout bite is picking up nicely and there are some decent sheephead being caught. I expect the fishing to greatly improve over the next couple weeks.
February fishing in Sarasota Bay is usually characterized by cooler water temps, frequent cold fronts, consequently, it’s slower, more deliberate fishing, with a focus on target species like sheepshead, trout, and redfish.
Sheepshead are the premier target this time of year, and are found in large numbers around docks, bridges, and oyster bars. Speckled Trout can be found located on deep grass flats, especially on warmer days. Redfish are more often than not found in shallow water sunning themselves, or in deeper, warmer, protected water.
